Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, NC --- Three clutch hits accounted for all seven Carolina runs as the Mudcats defeated first-place Chattanooga for the third consecutive game 7-3 at Five County Stadium on Tuesday night.
Five runs in the first inning catapulted Manu Olivera (W, 1-0) to his first Double-A victory, becoming the first Spanish born pitcher to earn a Double-A win. Olivera pitched five innings, allowing five hits and two runs, fanning six. The Mudcats took four of five from the Lookouts (25-15) as they met for the final time in the first half.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Lee Mitchell delivered a double high off the centerfield wall for a 2-1 lead, then Randel hit a three-run homer later in the inning against Travis Chick (L, 1-1).
Patrick Arlis then doubled in two runs in the third inning with two outs against Chick for a 7-1 lead. Arlis had two hits and two walks, reaching all four times to the plate.
Matt Blank pitched three innings in relief of Olivera, allowing a sixth inning homer to Aaron Herr, but stranding three other runners over his tenure. Kevin Cave, making his first appearance since May 5th, allowed a two-out double in the ninth to finish off the win.
Carolina moved to within six games in the Northern Division with 30 to play thanks to its season-tying third consecutive win. The Mudcats continue their 10-game homestand with the Tennessee Smokies Wednesday night at 7:15 PM ET with Adam Bostick (2-2, 3.82) starting the opener.
