July 24, 2019 - Southern League (SL1)
Mississippi Braves News Release
JACKSON, TN - The Mississippi Braves (15-17, 48-53) scored four runs in the first inning and cruised to a 5-1 victory over the Jackson Generals (17-13, 56-44) behind another quality start from Tucker Davidson (W, 5-6) on Wednesday night at The Ballpark in Jackson. The M-Braves have won six of seven since their 3-11 start to July.
Davidson lowered his league-leading ERA down to 2.01 with 6.0 innings of one-run baseball, scattering three hits, walking two and striking out nine for the second straight start. In his last two starts - both wins - the Texan has given up just one run on eight hits with two walks and 18 strikeouts. He now ranks fourth in the league and third on the club with 113 strikeouts.
The M-Braves handed Davidson a 4-0 lead right out of the gate. Ray-Patrick Didder opened the game by being hit by an Emilio Vargas (L, 1-3) pitch. Cristian Pache netted his 100th hit of the season on a single up the middle to put the first two batters on base. Drew Waters blooped a double down the third base line and despite running into manager Chris Maloney, Didder scored to give the Braves a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Greyson Jenista hit a sacrifice fly to center bringing home Pache, and it was 2-0. William Contreras (1) followed with a 413 foot home run down the left-field line, extending the advantage to 4-0. Contreras' two-run round-tripper was his first Double-A home run and his seventh hit over his last four games with eight RBI.
Didder (4) extended Mississippi's lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning with a solo home run down the left-field line, just clearing the 24-foot wall.
Davidson struck out the side in the second inning and at one point struck out five of six batters during the second and third innings. The Generals avoided a shutout in the fifth inning when Evan Marzilli hit a solo home run to right, the first Davidson had allowed since June 3.
Claudio Custodio (S, 2) took over for Davidson in the seventh inning and combined with the lefty to retire the final 12 batters in a row to end the game. M-Braves pitchers have given up just one earned run through the first three games and 22.0 innings of the current series and just one run on four hits in the last two games. The Braves have a 2.95 ERA this month which is second-best in the Southern League.
Waters recorded his league-leading 37th multi-hit game of the season with a 2-for-5 night at the plate, adding his 33rd double in the process. At the end of the game, Waters leads all of Minor League Baseball with 130 hits this season in 99 games played. Waters was the first in Minor League Baseball to 120 hits and 130 hits this season.
Game four of the five-game series is on Thursday night. RHP Ian Anderson (7-5, 2.80) makes the start for Mississippi against Jackson RHP Josh Green (0-1, 6.00). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 pm CT with coverage beginning at 5:50 pm on 103.9 FM, First Pitch App. and TuneIn Radio. The game will also be streamed on MiLB.tv (subscription required).
