First-Inning Flurry Fuels 5-1 Mississippi Win
July 24, 2019 - Southern League (SL1)
Jackson Generals News Release
Jackson, Tenn. - The Jackson Generals, the Double-A affiliate of Major League Baseball's Arizona Diamondbacks, took it on the chin on Wednesday night, dropping a 5-1 result at The Ballpark at Jackson to the Mississippi Braves. The win puts Mississippi (48-53) ahead in the series, two games to one, with Jackson (56-44) having scored just three total runs in their last 26 innings.
Things turned upside down on the Generals early, as starter Emilio Vargas (1-3, 5.37 ERA) conceded four first-inning runs, including a two-out, two-run homer by Mississippi's William Contreras, his first Double-A round-tripper. Vargas was able to complete the first inning despite facing all nine Mississippi hitters, and he stranded runners in the second and third without further damage before another longball did him in. Ray-Patrick Didder lined a one-out solo shot over the fence in left field in the fourth inning to push the Mississippi lead to 5-0, marking the sixth home run allowed by Vargas in the month of July. Relievers Kevin McCanna, Matt Brill, West Tunnell, and Michael Kohn each turned in scoreless outings through the final five frames.
Center fielder Evan Marzilli registered the Generals' only tally on Wednesday, golfing a solo shot over the right field fence in the sixth inning off of Mississippi starter Tucker Davidson (5-6, 2.01 ERA). Marzilli's homer was his first in a Jackson uniform since July 22, 2017, but no other Generals figured out how to break through against Davidson or M-Braves reliever Claudio Custodio (S, 2). After Davidson carried a no-hit bid into the fourth inning and struck out nine men overall, Custodio did not allow a hit in his three innings of relief, retiring all nine Generals who came to the plate against him. Jackson had only 3 hits, with one of them being a double by pitcher Kevin McCanna for his first professional hit.
