SAN ANTONIO - Fueled by a four-run first inning, Evan Grills and the Hooks hustled to a 5-1 victory over the Missions Tuesday night before 5,108 fans in the second-half opener at Wolff Stadium.

Corpus Christi (1-0, 48-23) has won 19 of its last 22 and stands 14-1 against San Antonio (0-1, 22-49) this year.

The Hooks sent nine men to the plate in the first inning. Aaron Northcraft surrendered three singles and one walk while striking a batter. Nick Tanielu and J.D. Davis netted RBIs while Derek Fisher came home on a wild pitch. The fourth run was scored courtesy of a dropped pop up by San Antonio catcher Miguel Del Castillo.

Northcraft (1-1) permitted just two more hits over the next four innings.

Grills (2-1) stranded five over six innings of work, including three men in scoring position. Nick Torres and Nick Schulz opened the second with singles, leading to the Missions' only tally.

Ryan Thompson, making his Double-A debut, struck out three over two scoreless innings. Eric Peterson, who handled the ninth, has not allowed a run in his last seven appearances.

The Hooks finally broke through against San Antonio's bullpen in the ninth. Mott Hyde cracked a two-out RBI double to left-center, cementing the victory.

The series concludes Wednesday morning. Kyle Lloyd (2-3) goes for the Missions. The Hooks counter with Edison Frias (3-0). First pitch is 11:05 a.m. and the game can be heard in Corpus Christi on 1400 KUNO-AM.
