Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
SAN ANTONIO - Nick Schulz's RBI single in the 13th inning Wednesday afternoon secured a 2-1 Missions victory at Wolff Stadium.
The extra-inning effort snapped San Antonio's 13-game losing streak against Corpus Christi (1-1, 48-24).
The Hooks' lone run came in the fourth against Kyle Lloyd. Conrad Gregor's fourth double of the series opened the frame. One out later, Chase McDonald smacked a single up the middle to put Corpus Christi in front 1-0.
Lloyd and five San Antonio (1-1, 23-49) relievers held the Hooks to one hit from the fifth thru the end of the game. Adam Cimber, Jose Torres, Jason Jester, Kyle McGrath and Yimmi Brasoban (1-0) teamed to toss eight scoreless innings, striking out eight against two walks.
Corpus Christi went 1-for-11 with men in scoring position and left 10 on base.
Hooks starter Edison Frias worked a season-high seven innings, limiting the Missions to five hits.
Frias benefited from a fine defensive play in the fifth. With two away, Miguel Del Castillo notched a single, and then Mason Smith drilled a double into the left-field alley. Danry Vasquez managed to cut the ball off on the warning track and connected with his cutoff man, Alex Bregman, who gunned down Del Castillo at the plate to end the inning.
Jose Rondon's two-out home run to left field in the sixth leveled the score at 1.
Gonzalo Sanudo and Aaron West each authored a pair of scoreless innings for Corpus Christi.
In the last of the 11th, right fielder James Ramsay put away a fly ball from Taylor Lindsey and threw out Nick Torres trying to reach third base. The double play ended the inning.
Lefty Michael Freeman (3-2) turned the Missions away in the 12th but was unable to do so in the 13th. Auston Bousfield worked a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a sac bunt. Following an intentional walk to Torres, Schulz ended the game with a line drive into center field.
Despite Wednesday's setback, the Hooks have won 15 of 18 extra-inning contests against San Antonio since 2012.
Corpus Christi returns to Frisco for a four-game series. Kyle Smith (1-5) gets the ball for Corpus Christi in Thursday's opener. The Riders send Luis Ortiz (1-3) to the mound. First pitch is 7:05.
