Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS - It was a show full of offensive power tonight at the Birdcage. The Canaries (2-2) hosted the Quebec Capitales (2-2) of the Can-Am league for a three game series.
Sioux Falls starting pitcher Joe Bircher got off to a rough start in the top of the first inning, giving up three runs, including a two run homer from Alexei Bell.
Bircher settled in after the second inning, forcing Quebec to ground into seven ground ball outs and two double plays over six innings.
The Birds' were looking for some offensive power trailing 3-1 going into the second inning, and they found it from major leaguer, Jason Repko. In his first plate appearance in a Canaries uniform, Repko blasted a two run home-run over the right field wall to tie the game at 3-3.
The Birds' took their first lead of the night when Michael Wing drove in David Bergin on a two run blast to center. Bergin also hit his first home-run of the year in the sixth inning, giving the Canaries a 6-4 lead. Richard Stock would add to that in the bottom of the eighth with a bases clearing double that would put the game away for good at 9-5.
In all, the Birds' totaled nine runs on nine hits, there largest offensive output of the year. Their three home-runs were the first of the season.
Bircher (1-0), picked up his first win of the season after tossing six innings, allowing four runs on seven hits. The southpaw allowed just two earned runs on the night while striking out four in the victory.
The Canaries continue their eight-game home stand tomorrow night against the Quebec Capitales, with RHP Brett Gerritse (1-0) making his second start of the season. It will be Web-Wednesday at the Birdcage, with lots of great opportunities for fans to win prizes all night long. Be sure to follow the Birds' on social media to learn more.
