Sioux City Explorers News Release
The Sioux City Explorers and Kansas City T-Bones squared off Tuesday night in Kansas City with the X's winning 2-1.
Explorers started the game off fast with X's centerfielder Matty Johnson singling to right field on an 0-1 pitch to begin the inning. Johnson then stole second and advanced to third on a overthrow by the T-Bones catcher. Michael Lang hit a sac fly to right which scored Johnson from third and put the X's on the board first 1-0.
In the bottom of the third inning, T-Bones outfielder CJ Henry lead off with a double. Vladimir Frias then singled to put runners at first and third with no one out. Kansas City catcher Brian Erie hit a sac fly to right which scored Henry, but Frias worked himself into an unconventional 9-4-6 double play.
X's starter Jeff Marquez had another great outing but got the no decision on the night after going 6.0 innings, allowing three hits, one earned run, no walks and four strikeouts. Jimmer Kennedy came in to relief in the seventh inning with each ball club still tied at 1-1. The right-hander kept Sioux City in the ball game pitching two scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and struck out three.
In the ninth, Michael Lang lead off the inning with a single. Rene Tosoni doubled to advance Lang to third, which put runners at second and third with still no one out. X's power man Brock Kjeldgaard drove in the winning run on a fielder's choice that scored Lang from third. After eight and a half, Explorers led the T-Bones 2-1.
Jose Flores came in to close out the inning in the bottom of the ninth. The righty kept his earned run average at zero holding the T-Bones scoreless in the ninth and getting his third save on the early season.
Losing pitcher was Kansas City righty Joe Van Meter who pitched four innings, gave up four hits and one run. T-Bones starter Blake Holovach finished with the no decision, allowing two hits, one run and two walks in five innings pitched.
X's lead-off man Matty Johnson had two hits and a run scored. Michael Lang went 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run. T-Bones outfielder Vladimir Frias had two hits on the night as well.
