Coastal Bend Thunder News Release

June 17, 2009 -- Robstown, TX -- The RoadRunners got the offense going early against Thunder starter Zach Beal. After a leadoff walk and three consecutive singles, the RoadRunners had plated 3 runs before the Thunder had a chance to take their turn against Eric Montoya.

The Thunder hitters struck back in the home half of the first on an RBI single by Manny Mejia scoring second baseman Casey Gordan. Gordan walked and advanced to second on a groundout by Mike Goss. Leivi Ventura continued his hot hitting and the Thunder inning with a single to center. On the play, Mejia tried to go from first to third and forced an errant throw from centerfielder Vincent Blue. Mejia scored and Ventura ended up on third. After 1, the Thunder trailed 3-2.

Beal found himself in trouble again in the third. Back-to-back walks to Reyes and German allowed 2 RoadRunner runs to score. A third came to the plate on a sacrifice fly to centerfield off the bat of German. Zach Beal battled back to induce a double play off the bat of McGuire to get out the inning allowing only the 3 runs making the score 6-2 in favor of Edinburg.

Edinburg loaded the bases with no one out again in the top of the third. Hereaud, Smith, and Gonzalez each singled and chased Thunder starter Zach Beal from the game. Beal finished the night having surrendered 6 runs on 8 hits. He struck out 3 and walked 5. Alex Gett relieved Beal and worked out of the jam allowing only one of three inherited runners to score. Gett struck out RoadRunner shortstop Angel Reyes for the first out and induced a soft RBI groundout to third off the bat of designated hitter Amado German. Cameron McGuire popped out to second baseman Casey Gordon to end the RoadRunner threat.

The RoadRunners picked up a run in the top of the 6th when a throwing error by pitcher Alex Gett allowed Edinburg leftfielder Robert Matlock to score.

The Thunder pushed across a run in the bottom of the 6th on an RBI single by Leivi Ventura to cap the scoring for both sides. The final score was Edinburg 8 and Coastal Bend 3.

RoadRunner starting pitcher Eric Montoya had the Thunder's number this evening. In 6 innings of work, he allowed 3 runs on 4 hits, striking out 2 and walking 2.

The RoadRunners loaded the bases with no one out again in the top of 7th, but Gett again worked out of a jam yet again, this time without allowing a run. On a flyout to leftfield, Mike Goss made the catch and made a strong accurate throw to nail the tagging baserunner Eric Gonzalez at the plate. On the play, Thunder catcher Kevin Butler made a nice play to dig out an in-between hop and apply the tap for the out. Gett, with a very strong outing, finished the evening allowing 1 run on only 1 hit, striking out 3, and walking 2. He kept the Thunder in the game but unfortunately the Thunder offense could not much going against the Edinburg pitching staff of Montoya, Martin, and Bridges.

The Thunder look to take the decisive game in the series tomorrow night at 7:05 right here at Fairgrounds field.
