Laredo Broncos News Release
June 17, 2009-Laredo, TX-The Laredo Broncos gave up 4 home runs and made a late comeback that fell a little bit short as they lost to the San Angelo Colts by a score of 8-7 at Veterans Field.
The Colts jumped out to the early lead in the top of the 1st, when Bryan Frichter hit a solo home run, his 1st of the season, making the score 1-0 in favor of San Angelo.
The Colts would add on to their lead against Broncos starter Maximo De La Cruz in the 3rd inning. Bryan Frichter led off with another solo home run, his 2nd of the game and season. Then with 2 outs, Nick Mahin hit a solo home run, his 3rd of the year. That gave San Angelo the 3-0 lead.
San Angelo would tack on few more runs in the 4th inning. Butch Ballez led off the inning with a double and would score on a 2 run home run by Hunter Jobes, his 1st of the season. That would chase De La Cruz from the game as Nathan Crawford came into the game. Crawford would walk Bryan Frichter, who would then steal both 2nd and 3rd base. After an intentional walk to Jason Landreth, Brian Nichols hit a tapper back to the mound Crawford got the ball and fired home. Frichter had a head on collision with Broncos catcher Jake Wells at the plate. Wells held on to the ball to get Frichter at the plate. Landreth would go to 2nd on the play with Nichols safe at 1st. Nick Mahin would follow with a rbi single scoring Landreth and giving the Colts a 6-0 lead.
Maximo De La Cruz only lasted 3 1/3 innings for the Broncos. He gave up 5 runs on 7 hits. He walked only 1 batter and struck out 5. The big blow was the 4 home runs he gave up.
San Angelo would add on another run in the 6th inning. The Colts would load the bases against Broncos reliever Nathan Crawford. Crawford would then be replaced by Carlos Alvarez. Alvarez gave up a rbi groundout to Shan Sullivan, making the score 7-0.
The Broncos would finally get some offense going against Colts starter Chandler Barnard in the bottom of the 6th. OJ Garza led off with a single and went to 2nd on a single by Mario Mendez. Argelis Nunez then hit a rbi single scoring Garza from 2nd. The Broncos looked to have a big inning going, but David Cardona lined out to the 3rd baseman Shan Sullivan who then doubled off Mendez at 2nd to kill the threat.
San Angelo would add another run in the 7th inning on a rbi single by Jason Landreth. That would give them a 7 run lead.
Colts starter Chandler Barnard shut down the Broncos in his 7 innings of work giving up no runs. Douglas Brandt would come into the game and Laredo was finally able to get their offense going. Luis Ugueto singled to start off the inning and then went to 2nd with one out when Mario Mendez was walked. David Cardona then came up with 2 away and hit a 2 run double scoring both Ugueto and Mendez. Cardona then left the game with an injury and was replaced by Steven Wright. Rafael Ozuna then came up and singled scoring Wright from 2nd. The very next batter Robert Moron came up and smacked a 2 run homer, his first of the season. That would make the score 8-6 heading into the 9th inning.
Laredo would make it interesting in the 9th inning. Luis Ugueto and OJ Garza would draw back to back walks to start the inning. Mario Mendez then tried a sacrifice bunt, the Colts pitcher Chace Vacek was able to nail Ugueto at 3rd for the 1st out. Then Argelis Nunez delivered a rbi single scoring Garza from 2nd. However Steven Wright and Rafael Ozuna would hit into 2 fielder's choices to end the threat and give the Colts a 8-7 win.
