Amarillo Dillas News Release
AMARILLO, TX - With dangerous weather once again threatening the field, the Amarillo Dillas early runs and solid pitching propelled them over the Rio Grande Valley Whitewings on Thursday night 9-3 in five innings at the Amarillo Nation Bank Dilla Villa.
Dillas starter Josh Smith (1-1) went all five innings, gave up only six hits and struck out a 2009 ULB-best nine batters while walking only one. Whitewings starter Juan Peralta (0-1) went only two and one-thirds innings and gave up all nine runs and eight hits while walking four. Dillas centerfielder Stantrel Smith went 3-3 with two runs and an RBI in the effort.
The Dillas struck first in the second inning. Smith singled and stole second, while Sam McLain walked. After a Justin Wenger walk, back-to-back groundouts by Willie James and Keanon Simon scored both Smith and McLain for a 2-0 Amarillo lead.
Amarillo would add seven more runs in the third inning. 11 batters hit in the inning which included five hits and every Dillas batter reached base for a 9-0 lead.
Despite two homeruns from John Poterson of the Whitewings, the weather moved in for the second straight night and ended the game after the top of the fifth inning with the score in favor of Amarillo 9-3.
With the win, the Dillas improve to 4-4, while the Whitewings fall to 4-4.
