Trenton Thunder News Release
Manchester, NH - The Thunder and Yankees' top pitching prospect Dellin Betances could not overcome three unearned runs allowed in the first inning, as Trenton lost 5-0 Sunday in front of 4,361 fans in New Hampshire. After winning the season opener Thursday, the Thunder have now dropped three straight games and lost the opening series of the 2011 season to the Fisher Cats, three games to one.
Dellin Betances, making his anticipated first start of the 2011 season, ran into trouble right away. After two quick outs in the first, New Hampshire catcher Travis d'Arnaud doubled and Mike McDade walked. Betances appeared to have worked out of the jam when Craig Stansberry softly grounded a ball to Thunder third baseman Bradley Suttle, but the ball tipped-off Suttle's glove for the error. One pitch later, Adam Calderone hammered a fastball off the wall in centerfield, clearing the bases, and the Fisher Cats took a 3-0 lead that they would never relinquish.
Betances settled down and only allowed one more run to score the rest of the way, but the Thunder bats were quiet once again on Sunday. Since the sixth inning of Friday's game, the Thunder have only collected seven hits in 21 innings of play.
The Thunder will turn to LHP Manny Banuelos (0-0, 0.00) tomorrow for the first of three games in Portland, as Banuelos will make his first start of the 2011 season after an impressive Spring Training. The Sea Dogs will send Michael Lee (0-0, 0.00) to the mound. Tune-in to the game on 91.3 WTSR-FM, WBCB 1490-AM and on trentonthunder.com. The SBLI Pre-Game Show with Jay Burnham and Hank Fuerst begins at 5:45 PM on the Trenton Thunder Radio Network.
