Altoona Curve News Release
ERIE, Pa. - Tony Sanchez, Starling Marte and Jeremy Farrell all notched their first Double-A home runs on Sunday afternoon in Erie as part of the Curve's 10-7 win over the SeaWolves in the series finale at Jerry Uht Park. Mike Colla (1-0) tossed three innings of relief while striking out five to earn his first win of the young season for the Curve.
The SeaWolves wouldn't go away quietly, pulling to within two runs after a three-run eighth inning off of reliever Anthony Claggett. Leading 9-7 in the top of the ninth, Altoona added on an insurance run when Eric Fryer singled in Quincy Latimore to make it 10-7.
With the three-run lead, Noah Krol came on for his first save opportunity in the ninth but things got interesting as Krol walked the first batter Deik Scram. Both Michael Bertram and Francisco Martinez singled after the walk and the bases were loaded with the winning run at the plate in Bryan Holaday with no one out. Krol struck out Holaday and then induced a game-ending double play off the bat of Audy Ciriaco to convert on his first save opportunity.
Altoona jumped on the scoreboard first in the game against Casey Crosby (0-1), who was making his Double-A debut for Erie. Brock Holt singled to start the first and Starling Marte doubled behind him to set the table for Jordy Mercer, who grounded out to bring Holt home and give the Curve a one-run advantage.
Altoona would load up the bases with less than two down in the first but wouldn't plate any more runs until the second when Jose Hernandez came home on a Marte groundout. With Holt on the bases, Mercer plated his second RBI in as many innings as he doubled in the Curve second baseman to run the lead to 3-0. Sanchez followed Mercer's double with his first Double-A homer and the Curve led, 5-0.
Erie would score a run off of starter Jared Hughes in the second but the Curve got it right back in the third on an RBI double by Jose Hernadnez to make it 6-1. Once again Erie scored in the bottom half of the inning to cut the Curve lead down, plating two runs in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to three. Marte answered in the fourth with his first home run in Double-A and Altoona's lead was back to four at 7-3. Hughes lasted four innings, allowing three runs on six hits with two strikeouts.
Farrell's home run came in the seventh inning and put Altoona up by five at the time, 9-4. Eight of the nine members in the Curve lineup had a hit with multi-hit games coming from Holt, Marte, Sanchez and Farrell. Marte, Sanchez, Farrell and Mercer each drove in two runs in the win.
With a split under its belt, Altoona (2-2) heads to Akron to take on the Aeros on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. from Canal Park. RHP Aaron Pribanic (0-0, 0.00) will make the start for Altoona while LHP Matt Packer (NR) throws for the Aeros.
Pregame coverage begins at 6:35 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network.
