SOUTH BEND, IN- The Beloit Snappers have just finished up a 3 game series in South Bend, IN against the Silver Hawks, the Midwest League affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Beloit won games one and two before losing the third game.
The Snappers won the first game in South Bend by a score of 5-1. The youngest pitcher in the Midwest League started for Beloit that night. The 18 year old native of Venezuela, Ronald Herrera, pitched 6 innings and finished with an ERA of 1.50. Besides a solo homerun by Breland Almadova in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Snappers had control of the game all along. Chih Fang Pan led the way offensively with a double and 2 RBIs. The Snappers were already up 5-0 when the homerun occurred. Matt Stalcup came in and pitched for 3 scoreless innings and kept the smooth sailing going.
The second game of the series turned out to be a little tougher to pull out but the Snappers held on to pull out a 3-2 victory. South Bend opened up the scoring first in the bottom of the 3rd. In the top of the 5th inning Tyler Marincov scored on a throwing error by South Bend's SS to tie the game up at 1-1. Beloit jumped out to a small lead when the newcomer, Luis Baez, doubled on a fly ball to centerfield and scored Boog Powell. Baez had just joined the team in South Bend just hours before the game. The Silver Hawks quickly struck back to tie the game up at 2-2 after Josh Parr singled on a line drive to CF Boog Powell to score Colin Bray. In the top of the 7th inning Boog Powell returned the favor by hitting a line drive right into center field to drive in the game winning run by Tyler Marincov. Beloit's Sam Bragg got the win and finished with a 1.69 ERA after replacing Bobby Wahl on the mound. Lee Sosa got his first save of the season after coming in to pitch in the 9th.
The third and final game of the series in South Bend was completely different than the two prior games. The start of the game looked promising when the Snappers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning when Boog Powell scored on a double to left field by Chih Fang Pan. Beloit's luck quickly took a tragic turn for the worse when South Bend scored 8 unanswered runs to win the game 8-1. The Snappers' bats just couldn't answer on Thursday night. Starting pitcher, Lou Trivino, gets his second loss of the season and finished the night with a 5.63 ERA.
Beloit continues on the road for 3 games in West Michigan to face the Whitecaps, the Midwest League affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. The Snappers return home to Pohlman Field for 6 games on Monday, April 14th. They will face the Great Lakes Loons, affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers the first 3 nights.
