Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill--- Despite a 5-3 record, for the first time this season the Cougars have a winning streak after beating the Lake County Captains 6-4 at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Friday.
Yasiel Balaguert continued his hot bat with a single in the first inning to bring home Carlos Penalver putting the Cougars on top 1-0. Balaguert reached second on Jacob Rogers' walk and made it all the way home when Danny Canela reached on an error for a 2-0 Cougars lead.
The Captains came back loudly in the second hitting two homeruns. Nellie Rodriguez took Torrez deep for a solo blast and three batters later Cody Ferrell connected on a two-run drive for a 3-2 Captains' lead.
Walks to Jordan Hankins and Shawon Dunston Jr. helped start a rally for the Cougars in the second inning. Penalver grounded out to bring home Hankins and Ben Carhart doubled to retake the lead for the Cougars. Balaguert kept the offense alive with his first triple of the season, to bring home Carhart and give the Cougars a 5-3 advantage.
Rodriguez took Torrez yard once again as he belted a solo homerun in the sixth inning to bring the Captains within one and taking Torrez out of the game.
Another Lake County error helped the Cougars plate a run when Penalver sent a ground ball back to the pitcher. The play was ruled an infield hit, but Jordan Milbrath's throw went wild allowing Penalver to reach third base. Carhart sent a fly ball to right field to bring home Penalver and add to the Cougars' lead 6-4.
Clutch bullpen work by the home team sealed the deal as Nathan Dorris threw perfect frames in the seventh and the eighth, while Zach Godley struck out the side in order to finish the ninth.
Torrez (1-0) picked up his first win allowing four runs on seven hits through five and one-third innings. Caleb Hamrick(0-1) suffered the loss and Zach Godley earned his first save of the year.
The Cougars and Captains will continue this series on Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch. Juan Paniagua (0-0, 4.50) will take the mound for the Cougars against Lake County's Adam Plutko (0-0, 0.00) at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. For tickets, please call (630) 232-8811 or visit www.kccougars.com .
