Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - The Cedar Rapids Kernels (5-3) scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to spoil a Lansing Lugnuts (3-5) comeback, 10-7, on Friday night at contest at Cooley Law School Stadium.
With the win, the Kernels snagged the opener of a three-game set.
The rally from Cedar Rapids came following a three-run eighth inning from the Lugnuts. After Mitch Nay scored on a wild pitch, Ian Parmley flared a single to left field off of Yorman Landa (BS, 1; Win, 2-0) to bring in two runs and give the Lugs their first lead of the game at 7-6.
The Kernels countered in the ninth against Jimmy Cordero (BS, 2; Loss, 1-1). With two on and one out in the top of the ninth, Cedar Rapids outfielder Zack Larson singled to bring in Jeremias Pineda and tie the game at 7 apiece.
With a pair of solo home runs already in his back pocket, catcher Mitch Garver hit a sacrifice fly to score Logan Wade and put Cedar Rapids ahead for good. The Kernels added two more runs to seal the win.
Cedar Rapids reliever Hudson Boyd earned his second save of the season with a perfect bottom of the ninth.
The Kernels opened a 3-0 lead in the second inning, while starting pitcher Randy Rosario kept the Lugnuts off the scoreboard until the fifth inning.
Lansing plated a pair of runs in the fifth and the sixth, trimming 4-0 and 5-2 deficits to 4-2 and 5-4 to keep the Kernels within striking distance.
In the loss, Carlos Ramirez went a perfect 3-for-3 and added a walk to end an 0-for-18 skid. Simultaneously, for the first time this season, Dickie Joe Thon failed to reach base, bringing an end to his season-opening seven-game hitting streak.
Lansing lefty Kendall Graveman (0-0, 0.00) will square off against right hander Kohl Stewart on Saturday afternoon at Cooley Law School Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 2:05.
