Salt Lake Bees News Release
SALT LAKE CITY (May 29, 2009) - The Salt Lake Bees, in conjunction with Hill Air Force Base, will host the Airman's Opener on Monday, June 1 to begin Air Force Week 2009 (AFW) at Spring Mobile Ballpark. The Bees will honor over 1,000 Air Force personnel and their families in attendance with pregame and in-game activities during the team's game against the Reno Aces at 7:05 p.m.
"We are pleased to welcome Hill Air Force Base and the United States Air Force to our ballpark. This is an honor for us to be selected to participate in this celebration of the dedicated men and women in the Air Force who serve our country," said Bees General Manager Marc Amicone.
Salt Lake City is hosting AFW for the first time ever and joins Hampton Roads, Va. and Sacramento, Calif. as the only three cities selected to host the event in 2009.
"The communities along the Wasatch Front have been phenomenal supporters of Hill Air Force Base," said Col. Calvin Williams, Air Force Week Salt Lake City Director. "It is a great honor to be able to enjoy America's pastime with the Bees, the great people of Salt Lake City and our Air Force family. We invite everyone to join us at all of the events this week."
Sidewalk activities on the ballpark plaza begin at 5:30 p.m. and include performances from Pegasus, a component of the United States Air Force Academy Band and demonstrations from the Air Force Honor Guard Drill Team. The Air Force Monster Truck and NASCAR automobile will also be on display.
Pregame on-field activities start at 6:30 p.m. The Air Force Academy Wings of Blue parachute team will parachute into the ballpark with an American flag and the game ball. The Honor Guard Drill Team will follow with a sequence of weapon maneuvers, precise tosses, weapon exchanges and a walk through of the gauntlet of spinning weapons.
The ceremonial first pitch will be thrown by Gen. Donald J. Hoffman, Air Force Materiel Command commander from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. The national anthem will be performed by the Air Force Academy Band's Stellar Brass. Concluding the pregame ceremonies, a KC-135 Tanker, accompanied by four F-16 fighter aircrafts, will fly-by over the ballpark.
Air Force Weeks were established in 2006 by the Chief of Staff of the Air Force. AFW objectives are to bring together an incredible mix of amazing people, unique platforms, and premier recruiting assets to provide the big picture of the Air Force mission and way of life.
AFW begins on June 1 and ends on Sunday, June 7. For more information on the schedule of events for AFW log on to www.airforceweek.af.mil.
