PORTLAND, Ore. - Matt Pagnozzi hit two home runs and collected five RBIs, and starter Clayton Mortensen allowed one run over six innings as the Memphis Redbirds defeated the Portland Beavers 8-2 before 5,962 Thursday night at PGE Park.

Jon Jay doubled twice and drove in a run for the Redbirds (24-21), who earned a split in the four-game series by winning the final two contests.

Mortensen (4-3) scattered nine hits and struck out four to win his second straight start.

Craig Stansberry was 2-for-4 with a triple and is batting .524 (11-for-21) during a five-game hitting streak.

The Redbirds were already up by a run when Pagnozzi took Portland starter Cesar Ramos deep for a three-run homer in the second inning.

Ramos (3-4), who was taken out after 1 1/3 innings, gave up four runs, three hits and two walks while striking out one.

Portland (24-24) got on the board in the fourth, getting singles from Kyle Blanks and Vincent Sinisi and a sac fly from Chad Huffman.

Jarrett Hoffpauir scored from third on a wild pitch by reliever Josh Banks in the sixth to make it 5-1 in favor of the Redbirds. Memphis added to its lead against Scott Patterson in the seventh, with Jay driving in a run on a double to left and Pagnozzi, who hit a solo homer in the ninth, drawing a bases-loaded walk.

The Beavers travel to Fresno Friday to begin an eight-game road trip that also takes them to Las Vegas.
