Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - On the day before his birthday, Clinton shortstop Anthony Phillips provided a dramatic solo home run to the berm in left - his first hit as a LumberKing - to tie the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth. In the top of the 10th, his two-out throwing error scored Wade Kirkland and spoiled the celebration as the Burlington Bees won 4-3 Sunday afternoon at Alliant Energy Field.

The LumberKings trailed 3-1 entering the eighth inning but loaded the bases on singles by Julio Morban and Stefen Romero and a walk by Mickey Wiswall. Unfortunately, they were only able to plate one run on a wild pitch by left-hander Jeff Urlaub. Urlaub then fanned Tim Morris and induced Steven Baron into a pop-up to end the inning.

Urlaub retired Kevin Rivers to open the ninth, but then served up the towering drive to left from Phillips, his 12th-career blast. Morban singled later in the inning to put the game-winning run on base with two outs, but Ramon Morla struck out for the fourth time to leave him stranded.

Right-hander Tyler Blandford (L, 0-1) got the first two outs in the top of the 10th, but allowed Kirkland aboard on a fielder's choice and committed a crucial balk that put him in scoring position. Left-hander Jason Markovitz then came on to face pinch-hitter Jose Rivero, who sent a bouncing ball up the middle. Phillips ranged to his left to make the play, but his throw to first was low and got away from Morris. Kirkland scored to put the Bees ahead, 4-3.

Bees' right-hander Chris Mederos (W, 1-1) worked around a fielding error to close out the Kings in the bottom of the 10th. He struck out Baron to end the game, stranding Morris at first base.

Morban finished 4-for-5 with two runs scored for the LumberKings. Right-handers Brandon Maurer and Fray Martinez combined to limit the Bees to three runs - two earned - on eight hits over the first 8.0 innings. Maurer fanned six over 4.0 innings in his first Midwest League start.

The LumberKings (1-3) hit the road for the first time in 2011 as they venture up to Beloit to take on the Snappers (2-2). Right-hander Seon Gi Kim (6-2, 4.90 career) makes his first start for Clinton, first pitch scheduled for 6:30 PM. The Snappers counter with right-hander Manuel Soliman (0-0, 0.00).
