Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
Fort Wayne, IN - The South Bend Silver Hawks broke out of their early season offensive slump in a big way Sunday afternoon, scoring 19 runs on 24 hits in a 19-4 rout of the Fort Wayne TinCaps. The victory was the team's first of the 2011 season, and marks the largest run total in Mark Haley's career as South Bend manager.
The Silver Hawks jumped out to a 5-1 lead early, thanks in part to a two run homer by Yazy Arbelo. The big first baseman slugged an 0-1 pitch over the right field wall in the bottom of the third inning, chasing Fort Wayne starter Adys Portillo (LP, 0-1).
The TinCaps chipped away and drew within one at 5-4 before Dan Taylor (WP, 1-0) came in from the bullpen to shut down the comeback attempt with 2.2 scoreless innings. Taylor combined with Eury De La Rosa (ND) and Mike Bolsinger (ND) to keep the TinCaps scoreless for the final 4.2 innings of the game.
With the strong relief work, the bats came back to life in the late innings with the Silver Hawks scoring three in the seventh, seven in the eighth, and four more runs in the ninth inning to turn the game into a rout. All nine players in the lineup scored at least one run for South Bend, while eight of the nine picked up at least one RBI.
Keon Broxton and Matt Helm lead the hit parade with four each, while Arbelo, Chris Jarrett, Bobby Stone, and Raul Navarro each had three. Helm led the team with four RBIs, but was joined by Arbelo, Stone, and Raywilly Gomez with three each.
Zach Walters, Arbelo, and Helm each scored three runs for the Silver Hawks, who somehow still stranded 11 runners on base despite scoring 19 times.
Bradin Hagens (ND) made his first professional start, and allowed four runs in 4.1 innings before turning it over to the bullpen. Hagens, who pitched strictly in relief the last two seasons, had a strong showing in his first starting assignment for the Silver Hawks.
The Silver Hawks will open up renovated Coveleski Stadium on Monday evening as they welcome in the Lansing Lugnuts (Toronto Blue Jays). Game time is scheduled for 6:30 PM Eastern Time with RHP J.R. Bradley on the hill for the Silver Hawks. Lansing will counter with LHP Egan Smith. Pregame coverage begins at 6:10 PM Eastern Time on www.silverhawks.com and www.sportsjuice.com.
