Amarillo Gorillas News Release

AMARILLO, TX - The Gorillas ventured back west after a Southeast trip filled with mixed emotions, going 1-2-0 in three dramatically different contests at Corpus Christi, Rio Grande Valley and Austin, the lone victory against the Killer Bees. Some disappointment came from the pair of losses as all three teams are in the thick of the Southern Conference playoff race.

4-3 LOSS AT CORPUS CHRISTI - McIVER PERFORMS DESPITE LACKING TOOTHPICK, RUBBER BAND AND STICK OF GUM

Perhaps the most heart-wrenching game of the week, the Gorillas jumped out to a 3-0 lead against the Rayz in the first 21 minutes of play on goals by Keith Rowe, Scott Wray and Joe Guenther before allowing four unanswered goals, three in the final ten minutes of the third period to loss 4-3. Corpus Christi entered the contest having lost eight consecutive games, five at the AmericanBank Center. Amarillo played a dominating first period, controlling the tempo all the way through, and an even second frame, holding a 3-1 lead after two periods. Entering the contest, the Gorillas were 14-0-1 in contests they were leading after 40 minutes. But, whether fatigued, lacking focus, or simply getting outplayed, Amarillo was out-shot 17-2 in a third period that featured Rayz goals by Chris Robertson, Shawn Legault and the go-ahead Derrick McIver score with only three minutes remaining. McIver's goal, his 17th, came on the man-advantage to snap a skid that had the Rayz 0-for-their-last-66 power play attempts. Overall, the Gorillas were out-shot 38-25 while each team scored a single power play goal, Amarillo in six chances and Corpus Christi in seven. Jamie Vandespyker took the hard-luck loss, dropping his record to 7-8-1 with 34 saves. Scott Reid improved to 10-13-1 with a 22-save performance.
