Bees Strike Late To Edge Beavers In Series Finale

SALT LAKE CITY - Freddy Sandoval hit a go-ahead solo home run and Brandon Wood added a two-out RBI double as the Salt Lake Bees scored twice in the eighth inning to come back for a 5-3 victory over the Portland Beavers in the series finale between the two clubs Monday afternoon at Franklin Covey Field.

After falling to Portland on Friday, the Bees (11-1) won the final three games of the set to secure their fifth straight series victory over Portland at Franklin Covey Field. The Beavers, who have lost six of their last seven games, haven't won a series at Salt Lake since taking four of five against the Bees, May 31-June 3, 2005.

Alex Serrano got his second win of the year with two innings of relief work. Serrano (2-0) gave up one run and four hits behind starter Nick Adenhart, who allowed two runs and four walks in his six innings of work.

Portland starter Josh Geer was sharp in his third start of the campaign, allowing one run and five hits while striking out four over six innings in the no-decision. Adam Bass (0-1) came in for Geer in the seventh and suffered the loss after yielding four runs and four hits in two innings of work for the Beavers, who now travel to Colorado Springs to begin a four-game series with the Sky Sox Tuesday night at 5:05 p.m. (Pacific).

The Beavers (4-7) took a one-run lead into the seventh and managed to tie it at 3-3 on Brian Myrow's RBI single in the eighth after Sean Rodriguez lifted a two-run homer off Bass in the bottom of the seventh to give the Bees their first lead.

Luis Rodriguez, who came into the game as the Pacific Coast League's leading batter, hit a ninth-inning single to stretch his season-opening hitting streak to eight games. Chip Ambres and Edgar Gonzalez each had two hits for Portland; Gonzalez broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth with a one-out single that scored Matt Antonelli.

Portland loaded the bases in the ninth, but Jose Arredondo, who logged his fifth save, got Antonelli to ground into a game-ending double play.

Oscar Robles' one-out RBI single plated Ambres with the game's first run in the top of the third.

The Bees tied it in the fourth when Terry Evans singled with two out and later scored from third on a wild pitch by Geer.

NOTES: The Bees turned three double plays ... Portland out-hit Salt Lake 10-9.
