
Bees sting in the ninth

The Burlington Bees stung the Cedar Rapids Kernels for four runs in the ninth inning to take the first game of a four game series, 5-3, in front of 2,956 fans at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Bees pounded out four two-out hits to erase a Kernel 3-1 lead off reliever Mike Kohn (4-1). Nick Van Stratten went 4 for 5 with an RBI and David Wood was 2 for 5 with a triple and 2 RBI. Bee reliever James Thompson (2-0) allowed two hits and struck out three over two innings for the win.
Tyson Auer and Alexi Amarista paced the Kernel offense, as Auer went 4 for 5 with a triple and Amarista was 2 for 5 with a double and RBI. Beau Brooks and Adam Younger added RBIs on sacrifice flies and Darwin Perez was 1 for 4 with a run scored.
Kernels starter Manuel Flores held the Bees to a run on seven hits and struck out seven over six innings of work. Andrew Taylor allowed a hit over 1.2 innings out of the Kernels pen.
Game two of this four games series is Sunday afternoon at 2:05 pm. The Zooperstars, presented by KCRG TV 9 and the Gazette, will be on hand to entertain fans throughout the game and it's Bark in the Park where fans can bring their dogs to the game with a âdoggie' ticket. Proceeds from the doggie tickets benefit the K9COLA program. And, it's a 104.5 KDAT Sunday Fun Day - get autographs from the Kernels prior to the game, play Travel Advisors Baseball Vacation Bingo during the game and run the bases and play catch in the outfield after the game.
