Bees Rally in Ninth for Win

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Burlington Bees scored four runs in the ninth inning to open their four-game series at Cedar Rapids with a 5-3 win. David Wood had a two-run double in the ninth to give the Bees the lead. The ninth inning comeback was the first for the Bees as they entered the game 0-23 this season in games where they enter the ninth trailing.

The Bees opened the scoring by putting up one run in the third inning. Jarrod Dyson walked and then stole second base. Nick Van Stratten then singled to score Dyson and give the Bees a 1-0 lead. The Kernels came back with three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead.

The score remained 3-1 until the top of the ninth inning when the Bees scored four runs. With one out, Patrick Norris was hit by a pitch and he moved to second when Van Stratten was walked with two outs. Angel Franco then singled to score Norris and move Van Stratten to third. David Wood then tripled to center to score both Van Stratten and Franco. The final run scored when Salvador Perez hit an RBI single to score Wood.

Sam Runion got the start for the Bees. In five innings, he allowed three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Derrick Saito pitched two shutout innings allowing just one hit with two strikeouts and one walk. James Thompson picked up the win pitching two shutout innings allowing just two hits with three strikeouts and one walk. With the win, Thompson now holds a 2-1 record.

The Bees had 12 hits in the game. Van Stratten led the way going 4-5 with a run and an RBI. Franco, Wood and Perez each had two hits. The win was the first this season for the Bees when they entered the ninth trailing.

The Bees continue their series at Cedar Rapids on Sunday afternoon. Mike Lehmann is the scheduled starter. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05.
