South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Fort Wayne, IN - The South Bend Silver Hawks were held to a season low two hits in a 5-1 loss to the Fort Wayne TinCaps in the series opener on Saturday night. South Bend has now dropped four straight and has fallen seven games out of a playoff spot with 15 to play in the first half.
The TinCaps got it started against Silver Hawks starter Wade Miley (LP, 2-5) in the second inning. James Darnell doubled to start the inning, advanced to third, and scored on an infield single from Jaff Decker that redirected off of Miley's glove.
The Silver Hawks tied it at one each in the top of third against TinCaps starter Erik Davis (WP, 5-1) without the benefit of a base hit. Rossmel Perez was hit by a pitch and moved to second when Ramon Ramirez walked. After a fielder's choice moved Perez to third, Brendan Duffy was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Victor Estevez walked on a 3-2 count, forcing in a run and tying the game.
That would be the only run South Bend would manage against Davis, who allowed just two hits over 6.0 innings to earn the win. Stiven Osuna (ND) pitched two perfect innings of relief and Brad Brach (ND) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the game.
The TinCaps took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth inning on a solo home run by Sawyer Carroll, his third of the year. They added a run in the seventh on an RBI single from Daniel Robertson for the 3-1 lead.
Miley allowed a season-high 10 hits in his 7.0 innings of work, but did not walk a batter and turned in a quality start, despite suffering the defeat.
A two run game turned into a four run game in the 8th, when the TinCaps scored twice against reliever Bayron Zepeda (ND) to put the game out of reach, and remained a perfect 5-0 against the Silver Hawks this season.
The two teams will play a Sunday matinee at Parkview Field beginning with a 3:05 PM Eastern Time first pitch. RHP Randy Rodriguez (1-1, 1.93 ERA) will be in the starting role for South Bend, with Fort Wayne sending LHP Mike Watt (1-1, 4.76 ERA) to the mound. Pregame coverage begins at 2:45 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
