
Timber Rattlers snap Kernels streak, 5-2

All good things must come to an end and the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers ended the Cedar Rapids Kernels 13-game win streak, 5-2, at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton on Friday night.
The Timber Rattlers roughed up Kernels starter Will Smith (2-2) for five runs on nine hits including two home runs over seven innings. Juan Sanchez went 3 for 4 with a double as Brett Lawrie hit a two run HR in the first inning and Michael Vass hit a solo home run in the second.
The Kernels scored their two runs in the top of the eighth inning on a two run triple by Matt Crawford, scoring Tyson Auer and Darwin Perez. Auer went 2 for 4 with a double and Angel Castillo added two singles as the Kernels were held to seven hits.
Wisconsin starter Dan Merklinger (1-1) allowed four hits and struck out six over six innings for the win and Jim Henderson allowed a hit, but earned his 13th save. Kevin Nabors worked a scoreless inning with two strikeouts out of the Kernel bullpen.
The Kernels return to Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday, June 6th and open a four game set with the Burlington Bees, the Midwest League affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. Gates open at 5 pm on Saturday on EMS Night where fans can learn CPR on the field prior to the game and enjoy a spectacular fireworks show following the game.
