Bees Shutout Skeeters For Second Consecutive Victory

(New Britain, CT) - The New Britain Bees (26-29, 59-59) defeated the Sugar Land Skeeters (37-19, 78-41) 1-0 at New Britain Stadium on Saturday evening and have now taken the first two games of a three-game weekend series between inter-division rivals. New Britain holds an opponent off the scoreboard offensively in a ballgame for the sixth time on the season.
In his Atlantic League of Professional debut, New Britain starting pitcher Jared Carkuff registered a no-decision after firing six and one-third scoreless innings on just four hits allowed, walking one while matching a Bees 2018 single-game season high with eight strikeouts. Sugar Land starting pitcher Michael Mariot also didn't factor in the game's final outcome despite having not allowed a run on two hits across five innings of work, walking three and striking out two. Evan Scribner retired the side in order in the top half of the ninth inning, striking out two in the process for his team-best 23rd save overall.
Carkuff was on his game early as he retired the first seven batters he faced, four by way of the punchout including striking out the side in the top of the second en route to erasing 18 of the 23 batters he faced on the night. Mariot was matching Carkuff pitch for pitch, but with the contest moving into the late innings, both teams were forced to go to their respective bullpens with the game still scoreless after six and one half innings of play. After the fans stretched out their arms and legs, Jonathan Galvez led off the home half of the seventh by cracking the first offering thrown by losing pitcher Yasutomo Kubo (4-2) over the left field wall for a solo home run, his ninth roundtripper of the campaign and 43rd rib-eye steak. The lone run was enough for the home team on this September Saturday in the Hardware City, as the relief trio of winning pitcher Jim Fuller (1-1), Sammy Gervacio, and Scrinber dashed any hopes of a Skeeters comeback, combining to strike out three on two hits surrendered. The Bees conclude their series with the 2018 Freedom Division Champion Sugar Land Skeeters at New Britain Stadium on Sunday, September 8th. First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 P.M. It will be another YMCA Family Fun Day in the Hardware City. Before the game, fans are invited onto the field for an autograph session with the team.
