Burlington Bees News Release
Peoria, IL (April 24, 2006) - The Peoria Chiefs (9-9) took advantage of a Miguel Vega error in the bottom of the fourth to score three unearned runs and held on to beat the Burlington Bees (7-11) 3-2 to complete the sweep of a four-game series at O'Brien Field. The Bees have now lost five in a row and are just 1-6 on the road.
Chiefs' starter Scott Taylor came out firing in his first start of the season as he was called up from extended spring training today. He retired the first 12 batters of the game. Bees' starter David Henninger wasn't perfect, but he held the Chiefs scoreless through three before the key bottom of the fourth inning. With one out, Ryan Norwood singled and Alberto Garcia was hit by a pitch to put two men on for Robinson Chirinos who has been red hot in this series. Henninger got Chirinos to hit a one-hopper to first, but the ball went off of Vega's glove for an error to load the bases. After striking out Jake Muyco for the second out, Henninger walked Matt Ciaramella to force in the first run and then Davy Gregg slapped a base hit to left that chased in two more. Henninger caught Dylan Johnston looking to end the inning, but the damage had been done. Henninger (1-1) would pitch a career-high 5.2 innings and strikeout a career-best seven, but got the loss. Eliezer Garcia, just activated from the disabled list today, pitched 1.1 scoreless innings in relief and Kraig Schambough finished with a scoreless eighth.
The Bees got on the board in the top of the fifth. JP Lowen's looping liner into shallow left-center went off the glove of a diving Garcia for a double. Lowen would score on a two-out single by Jose Duarte that knocked Taylor out of the game. It was Duarte's first RBI of the season. Mike Billek (1-3) came in and got Antonio Sabatini to pop out to end the inning and worked through 3.1 scoreless innings to get the win.
The Bees did rally in the top of the ninth against lefty Tim Layden. Chris McConnell and Kiel Thibault started the inning with singles and Valentino Arce pinch-ran for Thibault at first. Lowen moved the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt and pinch-hitter Mario Lisson cut the lead to one by bringing in McConnell with a groundout to shortstop. Layden hung on for his first save by getting Jeremy Jirschele to ground out to end the game.
The Bees move on to Battle Creek, MI tonight to start a four game series with the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays tomorrow night at C.O. Brown Stadium. RH Carlos Rosa (1-2, 3.46) will start for the Bees against RH Greg Rheinhard (0-2, 10.57) of the Devil Rays. The game starts at 5:35 Central time and will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 5:15.
