Spokane Chiefs News Release
SPOKANE, Wash. - Minnesota Wild prospect Adam Beckman set a Spokane Chiefs franchise record on Friday night, extending his goal streak to 10 games in a 6-4 loss to the Portland Winterhawks.
The Chiefs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a misplayed puck behind the Portland net as Cordel Larson stripped Winterhawks goaltender Isaiah DiLaura and deposited it home at 3:32. Portland answered with a trio of goals -- from Lane Gilliss, Gabe Klassen and Reece Newkirk -- over the remainder of the period and held a 3-1 lead headed into the first intermission.
Reece Newkirk, a New York Islanders prospect and the Winterhawks' team captain, registered the lone marker of the second period for his second of the night to extend the Portland lead to 4-1.
An action-packed third period saw five goals scored between the two teams, beginning with 2020 NHL draft prospect Jack Finley's eighth of the year at 9:43. Luke Toporowski made it a 4-3 game at 12:29, but Portland's Jaydon Dureau scored on the bump-up shift for Portland to push their lead back to two.
Beckman's record-setting goal came with the Chiefs on the power play at 14:26 as he one-timed his 29th of the season in from the right circle. The WHL's leading scorer, Beckman now stands alone atop the Chiefs' goal-streak leaders, pulling away from a five-way tie at nine games: Jaret Anderson-Dolan (2018-19), Adam Helewka (2014-15), Marian Cisar (1997-98), Brent Gilchrist (1986-87) and Terry Perkins (1985-86).
Bonners Ferry, Idaho native James Porter Jr. made his Spokane Chiefs debut, coming in in relief of 16-year-old affiliated player Mason Beaupit at the start of the second period and stopping 15-of-17. Porter was acquired by the Chiefs in a trade with Moose Jaw on Friday morning.
Beaupit turned away 12-of-15 shots he faced in the first period. Portland's Isaiah DiLaura went 31-of-35 for Portland.
The Chiefs converted on their one power play opportunity of the game and held Portland 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
