SALT LAKE CITY - Rich Gomez went 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs to lead the Portland Beavers to a 6-2 win Saturday night over the Salt Lake Stingers.

The win moved Beavers to within two games of first-place Edmonton in the Pacific Coast League's North Division

Dennis Tankersley (7-10) won for the first time since July 7, allowing one run in 5.1 innings. He gave up five hits, walked one and struck out eight.

Brandon Emanuel yielded five runs - four earned - in 6.1 innings to take the loss for Salt Lake. He allowed 11 hits, walked none and fanned three.

For the second straight day Portland scored first, this time taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Gomez picked up his first RBI with a sacrifice fly, scoring Khalil Greene from third.

Salt Lake (58-62) tied it in the second on Wil Nieves' RBI double to left field, but the Beavers regained their one-run advantage in the third when Gomez hit a run-scoring single to center field.

In the fifth, Portland took the lead for good with back-to-back homers. Jason Bay struck first, hitting a two-run shot over the center-field wall. Gomez followed with a solo-shot, his 10th of the season, to make it 5-1.

Salt Lake picked up its final run in the seventh when Nathan Haynes hit an RBI groundout.

The Beavers (59-62) added an insurance run in the ninth on Gomez's RBI single, which scored Bernie Castro from third.

Greene had three hits and scored two runs for the Beavers. Ben Risinger and Tagg Bozied went 2-for-4.

NOTES: As of Sunday, active rosters in the PCL will expand from 23 to 24 players ... even with Saturday's win, the Beavers are just 10-22 against North Division opponents ... Bay leads the team with 19 home runs ... Saturday marked the third time the Beavers hit back-to-back home runs in 2003 and the first time since June 14.
