Portland Beavers News Release

SALT LAKE CITY - Trent Durrington capped a 3-for-4 performance with a ninth-inning game-winning RBI triple as the Salt Lake Stingers beat the Portland Beavers 6-5 on Sunday afternoon.

The second-place Stingers, a half game ahead of the Beavers in the Pacific Coast League's North Division, salvaged a split in the four-game series.

Reliever Marc Kroon, the third pitcher of the afternoon for Salt Lake, tossed 1.2 scoreless innings to earn his first win of the season.

Cliff Bartosh entered the game in the eighth inning with a 5-4 lead, but the left-handed reliever couldn't protect Portland's one-run advantage. Bartosh (2-5) took the loss, allowing Salt Lake's final two runs.

Carlton Loewer, who hasn't recorded a win for Portland since July 9, lasted just 3.2 innings in his 20th start of the season. He gave up three runs and four hits.

Loewer was given a 2-0 first-inning lead, but the right-hander couldn't shut down the Stingers offense. Jason Bay drove in Portland's first run with a single, scoring Bernie Castro from second. Two batters later, Bay scored on an RBI single by Xavier Nady.

The Stingers (59-62) got on the board in the second, picking up a run on Adam Riggs' homer over the right field wall.

In the third, the Beavers answered with a homer of their own to make it 3-1. With one out, Nady launched a longball, his third since arriving from San Diego on July 24.

Salt Lake came back in the fourth with a two-run rally. After a triple by Adonis Harrision, Durrington hit a sacrifice fly for the Stingers' first run. Later in the frame, Gary Johnson hit a run-scoring single to tie the game, 3-3.

Nathan Haynes' seventh-inning sacrifice fly gave Salt Lake a one-run lead, but the Beavers scored twice in the eighth. Ben Risinger hit a run-scoring single and Alex Fernandez scored on an error as Portland retook the lead.

With Bartosh pitching in the bottom of the eighth, Salt Lake tied it again, this time on an RBI single by Keith Johnson.

Both Riggs and Wesson went 2-for-4 for the Stingers.

Portland had 11 hits, including two each by Castro, Bay, Nady and Yamid Haad. The Beavers (59-63) open up a four-game homestand Monday night against the Nashville Sounds. First pitch is 7:05.

NOTES: The Beavers finished their season series against Salt Lake with a 4-12 record ... Portland is 16-14 in one-run games ... Castro leads the Beavers with 35 multi-hit games.
