Nashville Sounds News Release

COLORADO SPRINGS -- J.J. Davis and Dave Doster hit home runs and starter Matt Bruback threw seven strong innings to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 5-1 victory over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox in the finale of a five-game series on Sunday afternoon.

The victory, which increased Nashville's lead in the PCL East to 5 1/2 games pending the results of second-place New Orleans' night contest in Albuquerque, marked the 35th time in 121 games this season that the first-place Sounds (69-52) have held the opposition to one run or less.

Nashville opened the scoring in the top of the second inning when Rob Mackowiak scored the game's first run on a Blake Barthol RBI single. The Sounds tacked on a pair of runs in the third to up the lead to 3-0. Doster belted a one-out solo homer off Colorado Springs starter Cory Vance, the infielder's sixth longball of the season. Davis followed with a double and came home on a Mackowiak RBI single.

Davis scored the Sounds' final run of the game in the fifth when he crushed a Vance offering off the scoreboard in left-center for his team-leading 23rd home run of the season, a solo shot that gave Nashville a 5-0 advantage.

The Sky Sox broke up the shutout in the bottom half of the inning when Pablo Ozuna tripled and trotted home a sacrifice fly by Mark Sweeney, who finished the five-game set with 15 RBI for Colorado Springs.

Bruback (8-10) allowed one run on two hits while striking out seven in seven innings of work to earn the win, which gave the Sounds a 9-7 win in the season series against the Sky Sox. John Grabow and Duaner Sanchez each tossed a scoreless inning of relief for Nashville. Vance (7-11) took the loss after allowing all five Nashville runs.

The Sounds travel on to Portland, Oregon on Monday to begin the second leg of their 13-game road trip with the opener of a four-game series against the Portland Beavers (AAA-Padres). The series will be the teams' lone meeting of the 2003 season. Portland won last season's series by a 4-3 count and took three of the four contests played at PGE Park, the Beavers' home yard.

Right-hander Justin Reid (3-5, 5.58) will take the hill for the Sounds in the 9:05 p.m. CDT opener on Monday evening. Portland will counter with right-hander Ben Howard (5-8, 4.31).
