FRESNO, Calif. - Beaver newcomer Xavier Nady hit a two-run double as part of a four-run third inning, as Portland defeated the Fresno Grizzlies, 4-3, in Pacific Coast League play Saturday night at Grizzlies Stadium.

In a third inning rally, Tagg Bozied doubled to score Bernie Castro and Nady hit a two-run double, putting Portland on top, 3-0. Donaldo Mendez tagged on the final run of the inning with a two-out single, giving the Beavers all the runs they would need for the victory.

Ben Howard got the win, allowing one run on three hits in five innings work.

Facing a 4-0 deficit, Fresno crept back into the game, scoring single runs in the fifth sixth and seventh innings, but could not manage to climb over the top.

Brian Dallimore knocked in two runs for Fresno, on a sac-fly in the fifth and an RBI-single in the seventh. Jeffrey Hammonds went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in the losing effort.

Brandon Villafuerte worked a scoreless ninth inning to earn his seventh save of the year.
