Edmonton Trappers News Release
Right-hander Paul Abbott (3-4) tossed a complete game five-hit shutout as the Tucson Sidewinders completed a doubleheader sweep of the Edmonton Trappers with a 7-0 victory Saturday night at TELUS Field. Tucson won the first game 4-1 as righty Andrew Good (1-2) yielded just one run on two hits and a walk in 6.0 solid innings. It was the first time in nine doubleheaders that the Trappers have been swept. Edmonton has spilt six twinbills and swept the other two. The sweep gives the Sidewinders a 7-6 lead in the season series between the two clubs. It's been a roller coaster ride of sorts for the Trappers and Sidewinders. Tucson won the first four games of the season against their North Division opponents. Edmonton responded by winning six of the next seven games before being swept on Saturday night. The Trappers and Sidewinders will continue this six-game series on Sunday afternoon with another doubleheader.
Tucson first baseman Billy Martin opened the scoring in the first game with a solo home run off Trapper starter Scott Downs (7-6) in the top of the second inning. Edmonton tied the game in the bottom of the frame when Scott Hodges and Matt Cepicky hit back-to-back doubles off Good with one out in the inning. Downs retired nine of the next 11 batters before yielding a one-out walk to Tim Olson in the top of the fifth. Second baseman Jhonny Carvajal followed with a double down the left field line that put runners at second and third for Good, who lofted a sacrifice fly into right field to score Olson. Danny Ramirez' slow bouncer down the third base line plated Carvajal with the second run of the frame for Tucson. The Sidewinders picked up another run in the sixth inning when Martin drew a one-out walk and later scored on a base hit by center fielder Luis Terrero.
Ramirez opened the second game with an infield single and advanced to third on Brian Gordon's base hit through the right side of the infield. He scored the game's first run when Chad Tracy grounded into a double play. Trappers' starter Ron Chiavacci (4-2) blanked the Sidewinders over the next three innings as Tucson held onto a 1-0 lead going into the fifth. With one out and Tim Olson at first Jhonny Carvajal hit a ground ball to shortstop Luis Figueroa, who threw the ball wildly into right field. Olson came all the way around to score the Sidewinders second run. Tucson put the game away with five runs in the top of the sixth. Chiavacci yielded a single and a walk before turning the ball over to Chuck Crumpton, who surrendered a three-run home run to Lyle Overbay. A single by Tim Olson plated Doug DeVore with the fourth run of the frame and Carvajal finished things off with a single that scored Olson from second.
