Edmonton Trappers News Release

The Tucson Sidewinders scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to break a scoreless tie and go on to defeat the Edmonton Trappers 4-0 in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at TELUS Field. The Sidewinders completed the sweep with a 5-1 victory in the second game of the twinbill as right-hander Brady Raggio (2-2) allowed only one run in 5.0 stellar innings. Tucson swept back-to-back doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday from the Trappers, who have lost four consecutive games for only the third time this season. Edmonton has only scored two runs in the four losses and is batting just .160 in that span. At one point during the back-to-back twinbills the Trappers went 23.2 innings without plating a single run, the longest scoreless streak of the season for Edmonton. Tucson leads the season series between the two clubs, nine games to six. The Trappers and Sidewinders conclude this six-game series with an afternoon tilt on Monday. Edmonton will begin a four-game series in Tacoma on Tuesday night.

The first game was a pitcher's duel as Edmonton right-hander Seung Song and Tucson lefty Chris Capuano each tossed 7.0 shutout innings before turning the ball over to the bullpens. With one out in the top of the ninth inning Luis Terrero reached on a bunt single and pinch-hitter Danny Ramirez followed with a double down the right field line to put runners at second and third. Chad Tracy hit a ground ball to first baseman Ryan Balfe, who threw home instead of touching first base for the out. Everyone was safe, loading the bases for Brad Cresse, who struck out. Lyle Overbay then singled, scoring Terrero and Ramirez. Tracy came in to score when Overbay was caught in a rundown. The Trappers failed to retire the first baseman, who later scored on a single by Doug DeVore. Edmonton loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth but could not push a run across against Brian Bruney (2-1).

Tucson scored a run off Edmonton starter Britt Reames in the first inning of the second game. With one out Brian Gordon doubled down the right field line. He later scored on a two-out single by first baseman Billy Martin. The Sidewinders took a two-run lead in the third inning when Terrero led off with a double, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Tracy. Edmonton second baseman Jake Thrower ended the scoreless string with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the third that drew the Trappers to within one run of the lead. With one out in the fourth inning Tucson catcher Robby Hammock singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He scored the Sidewinders third run on a double by Tim Olson. Terrero led off the fifth inning with a single and advanced to third on two wild pitches by Reames. He eventually scored on an error by Trappers first baseman Valentino Pascucci. Tucson added a run in the seventh inning when Gordon singled with one out and scored on a double by Tracy.
