Everett Silvertips News Release

EVERETT, Wash. - Everett Silvertips forward Beau Courtney has been named the Western Hockey League's U.S. Division Humanitarian of the Year for the 2022-23 season. He will be one of four finalists for the Doug Wickenheiser Trophy at the 2023 WHL Awards.

Courtney, an '04-born center from Parker, CO, has been an enthusiastic volunteer in the community all season. His active participation across numerous opportunities around Snohomish County have been both generous donations of time and admirably personable in nature.

"It's a well-deserved accomplishment for Beau," commented Silvertips general manager/head coach Dennis Williams. "Our organization does a really good job of getting our athletes involved in the community, giving back and showing appreciation with activities and fundraisers. Beau was our forefront and leader on that. It's not an award you strive to put your name into; you volunteer because you love to give back and that's what Beau did."

With COVID restrictions largely lifted this season and the Tips able to visit local schools again, Courtney was the first to sign up to participate with students. He visited Marshall Elementary School in nearby Marysville along with the team's mascot, Lincoln, both addressing students on the importance of kindness- an incorporation of the school's Word of the Month- and flashing his skills with a floor hockey demonstration with Lincoln. Courtney was eloquent in spreading a message of positivity and the importance of being a good teammate, even remaining by the school's bus stop for an extra hour after the assembly for pictures and autographs with individual students.

Courtney was also instrumental in a visit to Bethany Nursing Home in downtown Everett. As part of their activity hour, residents play a rousing game of Noodle Hockey, where two lines of seated competitors face one another armed with foam pool noodles and attempt to whack a beach ball to a given "goal" at the end of the line. Courtney, along with three other teammates, proudly stepped in as guest players, sharing their stories with the residents and posing for pictures and conversations for two hours.

At Everett's Tip-A-Tip event, Silvertip players acted as servers and busboys at local Mexican restaurant El Paraiso, collecting tips and selling raffle tickets to raise money for the Naval Recruitment District Seattle Officer's Fund. Courtney ranked as one of the team's top earners, enthusiastically chatting up diners and helping to raise over $4,000 total on the evening.

Finally, Courtney was a mainstay at the local Great Small Dog Race trials at Sam's Cats & Dogs in Everett. Though not required to appear at any of the trials, Courtney happily donned his sweater and met fans who signed up for the event, spending his evening on three separate occasions helping find the fastest mixed breeds, dachshunds and corgis.

"The amount of time and effort Beau put in on top of being a hockey player," said Williams, "It takes up a lot. We're really proud of him and we couldn't be happier for this recognition."

An Everett Silvertip has never before won the Doug Wickenheiser Humanitarian of the Year Trophy. Luke Prokop, then of the Edmonton Oil Kings, earned the honor most recently in 2022.
