Owen Sound Attack News Release
The Owen Sound Attack only had one game in Week 12 of the Ontario Hockey League season, but it was a big one. The Attack were in need of two points, especially against their division rivals the London Knights...who were on a 15-game win streak. The Bears came out fierce tonight and snapped the Knights winning streak in a 5-1 win.
The first period was fairly uneventful with a lot of turnover in the Attack zone. Billy Moskal was sent to the sin bin early on for hooking and the Attack had an early opportunity on the powerplay. London held their ground and no scoring was seen.
Just after the 10-minute mark, Griffin Wilson headed to the box for tripping and the Attack held up on the penalty kill to keep it a scoreless game.
They headed to the first intermission with zero's on the board, and Nathan Dunkley spent 2 seconds in the box before the buzzer went.
Mark McDade Chestnut Park shots on goal after one sat at 11-10, in favour of the Knights.
The second period began with 1:58 left in Dunkley's penalty for elbowing, giving the Attack another one-man advantage. The Bears sure took advantage of this and Markus Phillips, heading to the World Juniors Selection Camp this week, scored his 2nd goal of the season to bring the game up 1-0 Attack.
The Bears kept the momentum going and only 61 seconds later, Kevin Hancock found his 25th goal of the season and it was 2-0 Attack. Hancock has now surpassed his total goals last season and it's not even January yet.
The good guys weren't done there, and Kaleb Pearson sneaks one by to find his 5th goal of the season and suddenly its 3-0 Attack.
There was a controversial London goal, initially called off right away. Play went to review and there was a glove pass of the puck, and the no goal call stood.
London went to the powerplay when Jackson Doherty was caught hooking, but the Attack couldn't hold them off. Adam Boqvist found his 9th goal of the season on a snipe past Attack netminder Andrew MacLean.
With just over two minutes left in the second, Zach Roberts makes a beautiful snipe past London netminder Jordan Kooy for his 5th goal of the season. Attack head to the intermission up 4-1.
Mark McDade Chestnut Park shots on goal in the second were 13-9, in favour of the Attack.
The Knights came to play in the third period and gave the Attack a run for their money. Markus Phillips was sent to the box for interference on a very controversial penalty according to the crowd at the Bayshore. The Bears killed the penalty and Phillips had a chance getting out of the box but didn't have enough time.
The Knights pull Jordan Kooy with just over three minutes left in the game and Mitchell Russle sends the puck from the Attack blueline straight to the back of the London net to bring the final score to 5-1 Attack, snapping the London Knights 15 game win streak.
First star honours went to Owen Sound's Andrew MacLean for stopping 42 shots on net in the game, while Nick Suzuki earned the second star for his two assists. The third star went to Markus Phillips for his one goal on the night. Both Suzuki and Phillips head to the World Juniors Selection Camp and won't be back at the Bayshore until after the holidays.
Jackson Doherty won the Hatten Home Hardware Hardest Working Player of the Game, voted by the fans.
Mark McDade shots on goal after three were 43-28 in favour of London.
