Bears Outlast Indians in Extra-Inning Thriller
July 28, 2012 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Spokane Indians News Release
Spokane, WA -Second baseman Cam Schiller's fly ball left his bat with a resounding "thwack" and seemed destined to carry over the wall and into the Hallmark Suzuki Grotto. Unfortunately for Schiller and the Indians, Yakima rightfielder Mike Lang had something else in mind. In a spectacular display of concentration and athleticism, the Bears outfielder crashed into the fence while robbing Schiller of a home run, silencing a raucous crowd of 4,798 fans at Avista Stadium for Ian Kinsler Bobblehead Giveaway presented by Alaska Airlines, KREM 2-TV, 103.1 KCDA, and Out There Monthly.
Lang's jaw dropping web gem turned the tide of the game, as Schiller's near home run would have provided the difference after Spokane scored twice in the ninth to tie the game. The Indians still had a chance to walk-off in that inning, but Patrick Cantwell was cut down at the plate as he attempted to score the game's winning run.
Spokane threatened again in the 10th, loading the bases with one out, but a Cantwell flyout and Schiller groundout ended the Indians rally. The Bears didn't miss out on their opportunity in the top of the 11th, scoring twice against reliever Cody Kendall (3-3) to finally put the marathon game out of reach.
Lost amidst the late game excitement was another outstanding start from C.J. Edwards who twirled five innings of one-run ball while striking out five. In four starts with Spokane since his promotion from the Arizona League Rangers, Edwards ERA now sits at a pristine 0.95.
The Indians had 10 hits in the loss, including three from Gabriel Roa and a long homer from third baseman Ryan Rua over the Supercuts sign in the sixth inning.
Tomorrow is the second game of a three game series against the Yakima Bears and is Fireworks Night presented by The Spokesman-Review.
