Long Island Ducks News Release

(Central Islip, N.Y. Sept. 15, 2005) - The Long Island Ducks downed the Newark Bears 5-2 in front of 5,913 fans at Citibank Park on Thursday evening. Ducks starter Matt Beech fanned eight batters in his first win of the season with the Flock. The win improves Long Island to 33-28 in the season's second half. The Flock is in first place in the North Division standings and leads the Nashua Pride by three games. The Ducks magic number to clinch the North Division's second half crown is seven. Any combination of seven Long Island wins or Nashua losses will secure a postseason berth.

The Ducks jumped on Bears starter Pat Daneker early, scoring two runs in the opening frame. Carlos Hernandez started the proceedings with a solo homer. Donny Leon hit a single to right and scored on an error by the shortstop Jack Santora. The Bears cut the lead to 3-1 in the top of the sixth, but saw their comeback hopes quashed in the bottom of the frame by Henry Rodriguez. With runners on second and third, the former Expo drilled a single to left that scored both Jimmy Goelz and Justin Davies to put Long Island ahead 5-1. Newark added a run in the eighth but had the doors slammed by Mike Crudale who tossed a scoreless ninth.

Beech (1-0) picked up the win after yielding only one run on four hits in six innings of work. Daneker (10-8) took the loss after giving up four runs (two earned) on five hits in a five inning outing. Mike Crudale struck one en route to his fourth save of the season. Shane Arthurs tossed a scoreless seventh, while Dave Shepard allowed one run in the eighth.

The Ducks and Bears will play game two of their four-game set on Friday evening. Southpaw Pedro Borbon, Jr. will throw the first pitch at 7:05 p.m. Newark will counter with Andy Zwirchitz. Chris King and Mike Graham will cal all the action live from Citibank Park at 6:50 p.m. on WLIE (540 AM) Radio.
