ATLANTIC CITY _ The Atlantic City Surf announced today that its game with the Bridgeport Bluefish on Friday, Sept. 23 at 6:35 pm. will feature a tribute to Negro League ballplayers and all the African-American ballplayers who have ever worn a Surf uniform. Mamie "Peanut' Johnson, the only living women of the three who played in the Negro Leagues, will be in attendance that night, which will be entitled: "The Legacy Continues.''
Both teams will wear jerseys representing Negro Leaguers and Johnson will be available on the concourse to sign autographs of her book: "A Strong Right Arm.''
The Surf are reaching out the business community to step up and buy tickets for minority youth groups. Already Joe Jacobs, a local attorney, and The Pop Lloyd Committee have purchased blocks of tickets for local youths.
"We are pleased and proud to play host to an evening like this,'' said Surf general manager Mario Perrucci. "Atlantic City has such a rich legacy with the Negro Leagues, the Baccarach Giants and Pop Lloyd so it is appropriate that we stage this night. Plus the Surf have enjoyed a long, line of great African-American players. We want to reach out to the African-American community so they can come out that night and enjoy their history and heritage.''
