(HERSHEY, PA) -On Thursday, January 11, members of the Hershey Bears hockey team will visit Hershey Elementary school to kick off the first ever "Bears Cares" reading program. The Bears have partnered with Capital BlueCross to bring this great program to kids in the first, second and third grades.

The series of books that will be used are, Brady Brady, which are an illustrated children's book series for early readers. These books use hockey to promote sportsmanship, honesty, determination and confidence, and what better way to do this, than to have Bears players read them each book Thus far, there are a total of 11 books in the series, which are popular with young hockey fans.

On January 11, six players will visit the second graders from 2:00-3:00 pm. and read them one book from the series. Then on January 17, from 1:30-2:30 p.m. the players will go back to the school and read one book to the first graders. Finally, they will read to the third graders on Tuesday, January 23. They will also read book two to the second graders. The players will continue visiting the first and second grades at various dates throughout February and March. The third graders are responsible for reading the books on their own.

The program will wrap up in March. At this time the third grade classes will visit Giant Center for a pizza party and tour of the locker room. This is to congratulate them on their hard work over the past few months. In addition, all classes will receive incentives when the Bears read to them such as: bookmarks-compliments of Capital BlueCross, player cards-compliments of the Harrisburg Patriot-News and tickets to future hockey games.
