Bears Defeat Toronto But Fall In Lake Erie, Big Home Games Loom This Weekend
March 9, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Hershey Bears News Release
The HERSHEY BEARS Hockey Club won at Toronto but lost at Lake Erie this past weekend, and now return for a critical three-game homestand this Wednesday night. Following Springfield's visit Wednesday night, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins will visit Saturday prior to Bridgeport coming to central PA on Sunday. All three teams are within four points at the top of the East Division race.
Tickets for all BEARS home games are on sale now at the GIANT Center box office, or by calling (717) 534- 3911.
A tie at the top: After leading the East Division much of the season, the BEARS now have company at the top. A 6-3 win for Bridgeport coupled with HERSHEY'S 6-3 loss in Cleveland Sunday vaulted the Sound Tigers into a first place tie with the Chocolate and White. HERSHEY still possesses a game in hand on Bridgeport, and has one more victory than their Connecticut rivals. The two teams will meet this Sunday at GIANT Center. Face-off is at 5:00 p.m.
Chasing Cassolato: Left wing Alexandre Giroux picked up his 44th and 45th goals of the season Saturday afternoon in a 6-1 win over Toronto at Ricoh Coliseum. Giroux stands just five goals short of becoming just the fifth player in HERSHEY history to notch 50 or more goals in a single season. The Quebec City native is also just eight goals shy of Tony Cassolato's franchise record for goals scored in a single season. Cassolato scored 53 goals back in the 1982-83 season.
Varlamov returns: Goaltender Simeon Varlamov made his first appearance since January 14 on Saturday in HERSHEY'S 6-1 win over Toronto. Varlamov had been sidelined with a sprained MCL since mid-January. He won his 17th game in 22 decisions Saturday against the Marlies, but lost in his second start of the weekend in Cleveland against the Lake Erie Monsters.
Down the stretch they come: The BEARS have just one game left against North Division competition (Toronto on March 25) and only five games left against non-East Division clubs. HERSHEY will travel to Lowell, Manchester and Portland March 20-22 and welcome the Springfield Falcons to town this Wednesday.
Washington update: The first place Capitals travel to Nashville Tuesday and Philadelphia Thursday, leading the Southeast Division by 10 points.
