Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
WASHINGTON, PA - The top four hitters in the Traverse City Beach Bums batting order went a collective 8-for-19 as the Beach Bums won their sixth straight game with a 6-2 victory over the Washington Wild Things on Tuesday night.
Traverse City jumped out with a run in the top of the first as with one out, Taylor Wrenn singled and moved to third on a two-base error. The single extended his hitting streak to 21 games, moving him into a tie for second place on the Beach Bums all-time list, matching Matt Brown who hit in 21 straight in 2011. Jose Vargas came up next and doubled Wrenn home for a 1-0 TC lead.
In the third, Traverse City took advantage of a defensive miscue as with two outs, Vargas hit a sharp grounder that rolled up the arm of Jovan Rosa at third. That opened the door for Chase Burch to come to the plate and deliver an opposite field homerun for his fourth long ball in as many games and a 3-0 edge.
The Beach Bums upped the lead in the fifth as Ryan Still singled and Wrenn tripled him home to make it 4-0. The Wild Things scored their only runs of the night in the bottom of the seventh as with runners on second and third after a pair of singles and a wild pitch, Gus Benusa brought both of them home to cut the lead to 4-2.
Traverse City capped the scoring in the ninth as after a single by Still, Wrenn cranked a two-run homer to right.
The win went to Jacob Clem (4-3) who pitched effectively through 6.1 innings allowing eight hits and two runs. The bullpen was solid for the Beach Bums as Chris Squires pitched 1.2 scoreless, hitless innings, striking out three. Nick Capito pitched a perfect ninth. Gary Lee (2-2) took the loss for Washington.
Game two of the series comes up on Wednesday with Scott Dunn (5-0, 2.52) on the mound for the Beach Bums against Anthony Collazo (0-1, 2.30) for Washington. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm with the Budweiser Pregame Show on Sunny Country 101.9 FM beginning at 6:45 pm.
