Sullivan and Bats Lead to Win

Marion, IL - Despite the offensive output by the Miners offense, Richard Sullivan was superb in earning his second win of the season as the Miners defeated the Gateway Grizzlies 9-1. He pitched seven innings and allowed one run off four hits and two walks. He recorded one strikeout. The Miners offense recorded thirteen hits.

Gateway's only run came against Sullivan in the top of the second inning as right fielder Jet Butler hit a solo home run to give the Grizzlies a 1-0 lead. The Miners bounced right back in the bottom of the second inning as they scored nine runs off Grizzlies starter Gregg Downing to take a 9-1 lead.

Leftfielder Austin Montgomery received his first professional RBI on a base hit to score designated hitter Phil Butler. Centerfielder Tyler Hall grounded into a fielder's choice to bring home second baseman Cannon Lester. Third baseman Carlos Mendez hit a two RBI base hit to score Tyler Hall and Austin Montgomery. First baseman Gerardo Avila hit a RBI single to score shortstop Carlos Colmenares. Right fielder Ken Gregory added a RBI single and Phil Butler capped off the inning as he hit a three run home run, his second of the season.

Cody Hall pitched two scoreless innings in relief as he only allowed two hits.

The Miners play for the series victory on Wednesday as the they send Blake Nation to the mound in search of his fourth victory. He'll be opposed by Tucker Jensen (3-0, 1.55 ERA). First pitch gets underway at 7:05 pm. Mike Ventola will have the call on the Miners Radio Network beginning at 6:45 pm with the Heartland Regional Medical Center Pregame Show.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2012 Frontier League Champions and have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year three times since its inception. It has also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007.
