Miners Take Series Opener from Grizzlies in Marion

MARION, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners scored nine second inning runs and cruised past the Gateway Grizzlies 9-1 Tuesday night at Rent One Park.
The loss was the Grizzlies (18-9) second in a row after a league-high nine game win streak.
After Gateway's Jet Butler smacked a solo home run to left field in the second inning, Southern Illinois (15-13) erupted for nine runs on six hits and two errors in their half of the inning.
Gateway starting pitcher Gregg Downing (2-2) allowed all of the runs and left the game after only two innings. Downing surrendered nine runs, eight earned, on eight hits.
Grizzlies rookie reliever, Brett Higginbotham, pitched four scoreless innings of relief in his professional debut.
The Grizzlies tied a season-high with four errors in the game.
Gateway only picked up six hits with Jose Flores pacing the way, going 2-for-4.
The Grizzlies and Miners continue their series Wednesday night at Rent One Park. Right-hander Tucker Jensen (3-0) gets the start for Gateway. First pitch is set for 7:05.
