Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
SCHAUMBURG, IL - Every member of the Traverse City Beach Bums lineup had a hit and Brian Heere contributed with a three-run homer and a key defensive play as the Beach Bums downed the Schaumburg Boomers 5-3 to win their seventh game in a row.
The win gave TC a 21-7 record in June, the best single month mark in club history.
Traverse City got the offense going right from the get-go as Jose Vargas hit a first inning homerun to straightaway centerfield for a 1-0 TC lead. The shot was Vargas' 11th of the season and marked the fourth consecutive game in which he has gone deep.
Schaumburg would come back in the bottom of the first with three runs, two of them coming on a Nate Baumann double to score Frank Pfister and Steve McQuail. The Beach Bums got the runs right back in the top of the second as Sean Gusrang led off with a walk. Two batters later, Kyle Eveland singled to move Gusrang to second. Brian Heere came up next and lined a ball over the rightfield wall to put Traverse City on top 4-3.
The Beach Bums padded the lead in the sixth as Vargas singled, bringing home Chris Kay who had doubled to open the inning.
While the offense was producing for TC, Brooks Belter shook off a tough start to the game as after the first inning, Belter (5-0) allowed just two hits to Schaumburg from the second inning on, at one point retiring 14 in a row and 18 of the last 20 batters he faced. Overall Belter allowed two runs over seven innings of work. Nick Capito came in to start the eighth and tossed two scoreless innings to earn his first professional save.
Offensively, the Beach Bums banged out 13 hits as every member of the TC lineup had at least one base knock with Vargas, Gusrang, Eveland and Chase Burch recording two each.
Game two of the series comes up on Sunday with David Deminsky (4-1, 5.30) on the mound for Traverse City against Matt Kuna (1-0, 3.00) for the Boomers. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. with the pregame show on Sunny Country 101.9 beginning at 1:40.
