Joliet Slammers News Release

(Joliet, IL)- After opening the game with five unanswered runs, the Joliet Slammers fell apart late in Saturday's game, giving up 11 unanswered runs to the Rockford lineup in the 11-5 loss.

The Slammers pulled out to an encouraging 5-0 lead in the first inning off a run-scoring single from Erik Lis, a bases-clearing three-run double by David Fox, and picked up a free run off a balk from Rockford starter Jack Crawford.

Joliet was held scoreless from then on. The Riverhawks put two runs on the board in the fifth off a double by Javier Herrera. The Hawks blew the game open in the seventh with nine runs, forcing Joliet to use up three relief pitchers in the inning. They put up five hits, one of which was a grand slam by Jet Butler, and drew four walks. The score was 11-5 after seven, and Rockford held on for the win.

Despite a solid start by Tommy Mendoza, going five innings on two runs, the Slammers had to piggyback five relief pitchers to finish the game.

The Slammers continue their visit with the Rockford Riverhawks in game two on Sunday at 6:05pm. Fans can listen live on AM 1340 WJOL with Aaron Morse calling the action.
