Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums(35-44) took the opener in tonight's twin bill against the Washington Wild Things(45-35), in an extra-inning thriller, 2-1, but the nightcap couldn't live up to the first game, an 11-1 loss.

With one out in the first inning of game one, Isaac Benard drew a walk then moved to third on a Will Kengor single. Steve Lohr followed with a grounder to short, but since Kengor was running on the pitch, Washington could only get one out as Benard scored for an early 1-0 lead. Washington tied the game in the fourth when Hector Roa drove in a run with a single to center.

It took until the ninth, with the international tie-breaker rule in effect, but the Beach Bums were finally able to break through. Alexis Rivera was placed at second then, after one out, Connor Oliver was intentionally walked. Kendall Patrick grounded to short, moving Rivera to third then Noah McGowan won the game with an RBI single, easily scoring Rivera.

Matt Williams picked up the win in relief to improve to 4-2 on the season. He walked four, one intentionally, and struck out one. Zach Strecker drops to 5-4 with the loss, giving up an unearned run on a hit and a walk.

While game one was a tightly contested affair, game two was the polar opposite. Washington took a 1-0 lead in the first when James Harris scored on a double play. In the fourth, Mike Hill cleared the right field wall with a two-run home run. The Wild Things brought eight men to the plate in fifth to pull away. Harris hit an RBI double, Reydel Medina hit an RBI single with Harris scoring on a throwing error, then Roa grounded in a run for a 7-0 lead.

The Beach Bums got a run back in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-1. Josh Hauser and Connor Oliver each picked up singles to start the frame. They moved to second and third on a passed ball and two batter later, Will Kengor drove in Hauser with a sacrifice fly. Washington added four more runs in the seventh on a Mike Hill two-run single and a Ryan Cox two-run double.

Levi MaVorhis picked up the win for Washington to improve to 2-2. He went five innings, giving up a run on seven hits and a walk. John Havird is dealt the loss, giving up six runs on eight hits and a walk in four innings of work. He falls to 3-9.
