Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums blanked the Slippery Rock Sliders 7-0 at Wuerfel Park on Friday night to run their winning streak to a season best four games.
The Beach Bums jump started the offense by recording an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth. Jeff Vincent drew a two-out walk and scored from first on a throwing error by the Slippery Rock third baseman to give the Beach Bums the 1-0 lead.
One run was more than enough for the Beach Bums pitchers, who combined on their second shutout of the season. Ryan Gehring earned the win after 5.2 innings. He allowed only five hits while walking three and striking out four. Jeff Williams threw 1.1 innings in relief and Bryan Rembisz and Brett Bostelman followed with scoreless innings of their own.
The Beach Bums opened up the game in the bottom of the fifth by scoring five runs to bounce Slippery Rock's Nick Tracy from the contest. With one out, Steve Young connected on the first of two doubles in the game. Zack Kalter dropped in a bloop single to put runners at the corners. With two down, Brad Vericker singled in a run with an infield hit to make the score 2-0. Curtis Ledbetter drew a walk to load the bases. Jeff Vincent doubled into left center to score two and Ben Ramsey followed with a two-run single as well to give the Beach Bums a 6-0 advantage.
Another run in the sixth contributed to the final margin. Steve Young doubled with one out and scored on a base hit up the middle by Jeff Brown.
The Beach Bums finished the game with nine hits. Brad Vericker had two hits as did Steve Young. Young was selected as the Player of the Game following a 2-for-2 performance with a pair of doubles, and a pair of runs scored. He also drew a walk and was hit by a pitch. Manager Jon Cahill was able to use his bench as Brad Roblin, signed before the game, made his pro debut. R.C. Dickerson also entered as did Aaron Garza, who made his return from injury in appearing for the first time since July 3.
The Beach Bums will continue this 10-game homestand to start the second half with a special 5:05 pm start tomorrow night. RHP David Nathanson (1-0, 3.46) will make his third start for the Beach Bums. Nathanson will be opposed by Slippery Rock's LHP Dan Schwartz (0-0, 2.65). The game will feature a Mancino's Pizza and Grinders Beach Bums Travel Mug Giveaway for the first 500 fans. Tim Calderwood will broadcast the game on The Fox FM beginning with the Beach Bums On Deck Show at 6:45 pm.
