Rockford RiverHawks News Release
The RiverHawks beat the River City Rascals, 3-2, on Friday in their first game after Marksbury, the team's all-time saves leader, was signed by the Milwaukee Brewers. Tanner Watson and Jason Baca combined on a five-hitter, in front of a sellout crowd of 3,492 at Road Ranger Stadium. Watson went eight innings for the win and Baca pitched a perfect ninth inning for his first professional save.
All-star right fielder Jason James was 3-for-4 in his first game of the second half.
Matt Sauls led off the Rockford first inning with a double to left and Joe Anthonsen singled him to third. James singled in Sauls and Anthonsen scored when Will Henderson grounded into a double play.
James led off the fourth inning with a double and scored on a Chris Clem wild pitch. Clem (1-4) gave up seven hits in a complete-game loss.
Watson (4-1) struck out 10, the best total by a Rockford pitcher this year and one strikeout short of his career best. Watson had a shutout until Brad Hough hit a two-out, two-run double to left-center in the sixth inning.
The series continues at 7:05 p.m. Saturday on Rich Austin Night. The first 1,000 through the gate will receive a Rich Austin throwback bobblehead doll, as the RiverHawks honor the 2004 Frontier League Player of the Year. It's also Faith Night, featuring a postgame Christian-rock concert.
The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, a 12-team independent professional baseball league in its 15th season.
