River City Rascals News Release
Rockford, IL--The River City Rascals were trying to view it as a fresh start. In the month of July the Rascals were 6-3, a far cry better than the 12-25 which they started. After the three days off for the all-star break, the Rascals were back in action at Rockford to take on the RiverHawks.
Chris Clem was on the mound for the Rascals, as he was trying to continue his effective string of starts. Over Clem's previous three, he saw his ERA go from 7.03 to 4.74.
Things did not start well for Clem and the Rascals however. After a one-two-three top of the first, Clem gave up a lead-off single to Matt Sauls, and then a single to Joe Anthonsen. Both Sauls and Anthonsen would come around to score, one on a RBI single from Jason James, the other on a 4-6-3 double play.
With the score 2-0, the Rascals couldn't get anything going off RiverHawk starter Tanner Watson. Watson allowed just two hits through the first five innings.
The RiverHawks would add another run in the fourth when James doubled and then scored later on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.
The Rascals put up one offensive surge against Watson coming in the sixth when singles from Bobby Mosby and Trey Hendricks put two on with two out for Brad Hough. Hough would hit a double into the left-center field gap, scoring both Rascals to make it 3-2.
The Rascals would never threaten again.
Watson went on to finish with eight innings, while striking out ten Rascals. He gave up just five hits and walked one.
New closer Jason Baca worked a scoreless ninth after previous closer Mike Marksbury was picked up by the Brewers.
Watson improved to 4-1 and Clem dropped to 1-4. It was Baca first save.
The Rascals are now 18-29 on the season while the RiverHawks improved to 22-25. The two are back in action Saturday night at Road Ranger Stadium. First pitch is at 7:05 pm. Jonathon Miller (3-0) will throw for the Rascals while James Cramphin (0-1) goes for Rockford.
